How to Use 100% of an Egg

  • A box of organic eggs

Level 1: Egg White Meringues
Start by separating the egg whites from the yolks. In a clean, dry bowl, whip the egg whites with a pinch of cream of tartar until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar, continuing to beat until stiff, glossy peaks are achieved. Pipe the meringue onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 100°C (212°F) for about 1-1.5 hours, or until they are dry and crisp on the outside. Allow them to cool completely before enjoying. This simple, delicious treat uses only the egg whites, reducing waste right from the start.

Level 2: Egg Shell Fertilizer
Once you’ve enjoyed your meringues, take the egg shells and rinse them thoroughly. Dry them out in the oven at 120°C (250°F) for about 15 minutes to ensure they’re completely dry and brittle. After they’ve cooled, crush them into small pieces or grind them into a fine powder. This crushed egg shell makes an excellent, nutrient-rich fertilizer for your plants. Simply sprinkle it around the base of your plants to add calcium and other minerals to the soil, promoting healthy growth and reducing waste!

Level 3: Egg Carton Seed Starters
Now that you’ve used the whites and shells, let’s tackle the egg carton! Instead of throwing it away, repurpose it as a seed starter. Take an empty egg carton and fill each compartment with a small amount of potting soil. Plant your favorite seeds in each compartment, ensuring they are planted to the recommended depth. Water gently and place the carton in a sunny spot. Once the seedlings are ready to be transplanted, you can even plant the whole carton directly into the garden, as the cardboard will decompose naturally. This creative use of the carton helps you grow new life while minimizing waste.
