Understanding the Impact of Food Waste: A Call to Action

Food waste is a pressing global issue with far-reaching environmental, economic, and social consequences. Every year, an estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally, which includes not only leftovers but also perfectly good produce that could have fed millions*. This waste significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbates food insecurity. For instance, did you know that the production and disposal of just one kilogram of beef generates as much greenhouse gas as driving a car for over 150 kilometers?** This September, as we approach the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) on September 29th, we aim to raise awareness and inspire action through our “From Plate to Planet” quiz.

Food waste isn’t just about discarded leftovers; it has profound implications for our planet. The production, transportation, and disposal of wasted food account for nearly 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions***. When food is thrown away, all the resources used to produce it – such as water, energy, and labor – are wasted as well. For example, producing a single apple requires around 560 liters of water, which is wasted when the fruit ends up in the trash.**** Moreover, food waste contributes to landfill overflow, leading to the emission of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

The Importance of Sustainable Practices

Addressing food waste is crucial for advancing sustainability. Simple actions like meal planning, proper food storage, and creative use of leftovers can significantly reduce waste. For instance, freezing surplus bread or repurposing vegetable scraps into broth are easy ways to cut down on waste. Not only do these practices help lessen environmental impact, but they also contribute to food security by ensuring that more food reaches those in need rather than ending up in landfills.

Get Involved

To help you understand your role in this global challenge, we’ve created the “From Plate to Planet” quiz.
